Dominique Rodgers Cromartie had a stellar 2016 season recording 6 interceptions but he followed that up with 0 interceptions this past year. Evidently that made Rodgers Cromartie expendable in the Giants’ eyes and now the two sides are going their separate ways. Rodgers Cromartie was asked to take a pay cut after he struggled to find his grove in the last 15 games (He missed one game due to suspension). New York had talked about moving the 31 year old to safety opposed to corner but those plans will go out the window too because Rodgers Cromartie is no longer with the team. There will still be a $2 million dollar hit against Big Blue’s salary cap but that’s not too big of concern when it comes to the big picture. Ultimately this will open up a roster spot for a younger up and coming player to establish himself. The Giants really struggled last season with a 3-13 record and that means things have to be shook up a bit. Moving on from former Head Coach Ben McAdoo was part of that sequence of moves. Releasing Dominique Rodgers Cromartie is just the next domino to fall and new General Manger Dave Gettleman is hoping these changes will result in positive outcomes when it comes time to take the field. It feels like there’s also an emphasis being put on cleaning up the locker room a bit. By making it clear that anyone who isn’t all for the team will be purged, it’s sets a good precedent for the other guys in the locker room because now players know they will be held accountable. New York has to get back to playing for each other instead of acting as individuals. Gettleman is a proven winner and expect the G-Men to turn things around rather quickly. They’ll have free agency and the draft to make a splash.

The Chargers made a huge acquisition when they signed Casey Hayward away from Green Bay in March 2016. Green Bay thought Hayward was expendable because of their cornerback depth back then. However if you went back in time and replayed the situation it’s doubtful the Packers would pass on Hayward again. Ever since arriving in Southern California Hayward has been one of the premier cornerbacks in all football. The Chargers stand out has 12 interceptions over his past two seasons which proves he has a knack for forcing turnovers. With Joey Bosa and Melvin Ingram stirring stuff up at the line of scrimmage. Hayward gets to focus on the passing game and he usually finds ways to capitalize in coverage. A lot of that comes from Hayward’s instincts. The 28 year old does a great job of positioning himself and then Hayward usually finds a way to finish the play because he has great hands for a secondary player. On film there was numerous plays when this guy extended his hands way away from his body and intercepted a pass. By having a skill set that’s on par with a receiver’s that helps the Chargers defense fight fire with fire. Hayward is certainly the real deal and now he’ll make $12 million dollars per year with $20 million of that guaranteed. Coming off of two straight Pro Bowls will help you earn that kind of money and imagine what it’s done for Casey Hayward’s confidence? He has to believe in his abilities more than ever and that’s going to bring even more positive results to the football field. LA realized this and now they’re rolling out the dough to make sure they keep Hayward in the fold for at least the next three years. This was a good move because the Chargers couldn’t afford to let Hayward walk anytime soon.

The Minnesota Vikings drafted a tremendous player last off-season when they selected Dalvin Cook out of Florida State University. Cook was an impact player from day 1 rushing for 354 yards in only four games of action. That’s why it was such a devastating blow for the Vikings when Cook tore his ACL. If the rookie stayed healthy there’s a good chance he could have contested Kareem Hunt for the league’s rushing title. Those talents would have been very beneficial against the Eagles in the NFC Championship Game as well. The good news is Latavius Murray had a chance to get some good momentum going in Cook’s absence. Murray rushed for 842 yards and 8 touchdowns last season proving he could still be a force on the ground. When you bring Dalvin Cook back from those medical setbacks he endured and then you combine his skill set with Latavius Murray’s. That’s when you realize just how dynamic this Vikings offense can be in 2018. Both of these running backs could be starters on other teams and instead they’ll share time in Minnesota. Expect to see a lot of rushing production in the Twin Cities this upcoming season because this is one of the most feared running back combos in all of the NFL. That makes the Vikings quarterback job a compelling offer and because of that Kirk Cousins could end up wearing purple next season. Why not go to a Super Bowl contender and allow Cook and Murray to take the pressure off of you? By handing the ball off Cousins can take less hits throughout his career which will actually extend his playing days. Cook and Murray will also cause those linebackers to gamble and sell out against the run. Which we know will open up more windows in the passing game. Cousins stats would improve because of that so expect Dalvin Cook and Latavius Murray to be a big factor in the free agent quarterback’s decision.

After being released yesterday it appears the San Francisco 49ers are the front-runner to land former Seahawks stand out Richard Sherman. Sherman is 29 years old and could have several good seasons left in him especially when you consider Minnesota’s Terrence Newman is still playing at the age of 38. Even though Sherman was injured last year and finished up 2017 on injured reserve. That doesn’t mean the veteran defensive back can’t bounce back from those medical concerns. One big advantage Sherman might have is going to a new team. By joining a new organization like the 49ers the former Stanford alum will have a chance to become reinvigorated. Sometimes a change of scenery can be healthy and remember Sherman is from California (Compton). After spending the last several years in Washington it might be good to go back to his home state and San Francisco is only 37 miles away from Stanford. Sherman has a lot of connections in the area so it’s not like he’ll be completely out of his comfort zone. It seems like Seattle was becoming a stale situation for players like Michael Bennet, Earl Thomas, and Sherman so it was the right time for Pete Carroll to shake things up. Richard Sherman also has 32 interceptions over his several NFL seasons which makes it obvious he has a knack for forcing turnovers. San Francisco could really benefit from those abilities and it will be all about regaining his top form. Everything else is in the past, the only thing that matters is being able to produce for your new team. Whether that’s the 49ers, Chargers, or Raiders it doesn’t matter just go out there and make plays. It takes 100% focus and a drive that’s on another level to succeed in this league. The most interceptions Sherman ever had in a season was 8 therefore a good goal for 2018 would be 5 INTS. That’s a realistic bar to set coming back from an injury. It would also be significant contribution for the team that ends up signing Richard Sherman.
