Well we know now that the Kansas City Chiefs intend to part ways with Alex Smith. Kansas City’s front office decided that moving on from Smith immediately was the best course of action for their team. With second year quarterback Patrick Mahomes waiting in the stable there was no sense is letting Alex Smith’s situation play out any longer. Ultimately that compelled the Chiefs to trade Smith for a 3rd round pick plus Kendall Fuller. The draft pick will help Andy Reid’s team improve in the Spring and Kendall Fuller will immediately be an upgrade in the team’s secondary over Terrance Mitchell, Steven Nelson or Phillip Gaines. On the Redskins end of the deal, Washington gets their franchise QB who is playing some of his best football ever. Smith led the entire NFL with a 104.7 passer rating and it was the right time to bring him in to lead Jay Gruden’s ball club. The Redskins will now have a reliable signal caller who can raise the bar for their franchise. From there it’s about adding a pass catcher who can go over the 1,000 yard mark because Jamison Crowder was the closest to achieving that feat and he only had 789 yards this past year. With Terrelle Pryor underachieving during his time in the nation’s capital don’t expect him to be back on the roster either and Daniel Snyder has to find someone who can bring more to the table as far as catching the football goes. Landing Allen Robinson, Jarvis Landry, or Sammy Watkins would certainly be a huge boost for the passing game and would blend nicely with the addition of Smith. The other big factor in this trade is how it affects Kirk Cousins. We know now that Cousins will hit the open market so it’s clear the rift between the Redskins / Cousins was real and ultimately caused contract negotiations to breakdown. Cousins will have the opportunity to sign with any organization he wants but the front-runners should be the Denver Broncos and New York Jets.

It’s time to really acknowledge and embrace Frank Gore’s 13 year excellence:

Indianapolis Colts Running Back Frank Gore just capped off his 13th season and he managed to rattle off 961 yards this past year. Gore has been flat out dominant since entering the National Football League back in 2005 and while early on in his career we were blown away by Gore’s physicality running the ball. Now we’re astonished by the longevity the Indianapolis ball carrier has had playing pro football. Most running backs slow down at the 30 years old mark but Frank Gore has still been running hard at 34. Even though this guy is a free agent this off-season there’s a good chance some team will ink him to at least a one year contract. That’s because Gore can still provide you something on the ground and why not sign the veteran if your team is desperate to find a good tailback? The only argument against Gore is a coach might prefer to give those snaps to a younger player. However if you’re one of the bottom 25-32 teams when its comes to running the football, you should definitely consider signing Frank Gore. It would be nice to see the San Francisco 49ers pick up Gore because that’s where his career started. The Niners have a ton of cap space ($115M) and can probably sign their former player (Gore) for almost nothing. That addition would provide great value for Kyle Shanhan’s team at a bargain price. The fans would definitely be behind the signing as well, so not only do you get better as a football team you also would generate a little buzz too. By tapping into San Francisco’s history and bringing back a player who has got it done for the team for so many years would be great for the culture in California. John Lynch has the power to make it happen and he definitely should pull the trigger on that deal.

Bradley Chubb is the most real deal defender coming out of college football this year. Expect the N.C State defensive end to go in the top 5:

North Carolina State was lucky to have Defensive End Bradley Chubb on their roster for the past four seasons. Chubb was a physical specimen for the Wolfpack’s defensive line constantly providing big plays for Dave Doeren’s football team. Chubb was so dominant he recorded 25 sacks and 54.5 tackles for loss during his time in Raleigh, North Carolina. This kid is nearly unstoppable when he gets his momentum going and that’s why some NFL team is going take the senior within the top 5 picks of the draft this Spring. Most of the mock draft boards have the New York Giants taking a quarterback with the number 2 pick. However it feels like Dave Gettleman and Pat Shurmur are excited about working with Eli Manning. Which means the Giants could end up taking Bradley Chubb with the second overall selection. New York only registered 27 sacks for the entire 2017 season. That was 29th in the league for overall sack production and you can’t win football games with a depleted pass rush. Gettleman knows he has the opportunity to wait when it comes to drafting a QB and by picking up Chubb the G-Men could add the league’s next great young talent. Why not get a player who has the chance to be on the field from day 1 instead of taking a quarterback that will sit until Manning is done? It’s a much more reasonable course of action if you’re trying to win football games right now and this new staff didn’t get hired to take their time. Shurmur and the rest of those guys are ready to make an impact a soon as they step in the Big Apple. With Jason Pierre-Paul, Olivier Vernon, Damon Harrison, and Bradley Chubb all working on that defensive line there’s no way the Giants can’t make a splash. This move would be the first step in restoring this franchise back to promise.

Ezekiel Ansah will be one of the most talented free agents available. Signing him would instantly upgrade any team’s pass rush:

Detroit Lions Defensive End Ezekiel Ansah looks like he is heading for free agency and the former 2013 first round draft pick would immediately upgrade any team’s pass rush. The Lions should be exploring all options when it comes to retaining Ansah but General Manager Bob Quin seems to be committed to an analytics approach similar to how the Patriots operate. That could spell the end of Ansah’s time in Detroit because it’s going to take some big bucks to bring him back to the Motor City. Which ultimately opens the door for some potential bidder to lure the veteran pass rusher away when the free agency window opens in March. The Buccaneers were the worst team in the entire league when it came to sacking the quarterback with only 22 in 2017. Tampa Bay should be doing everything they can to prepare a sweet offer for Ansah because he will bring a different mentality to their defensive front. The 28 year old still has plenty of gas left in the tank and even though Ansah has battled a lot of injuries the past two years. When you have a player that can easily be a 10+ sacks guy, you have to roll out the big money and do your best to sign him. If the Buccaneers can’t ink the Ghana born Ansah then the Colts, Giants, Bills, and Jets should also be in play. The bottom line is most of the health concerns about Ziggy Ansah are unfair. This is a high character individual who gives maximum effort on every single snap. His 44 sacks in 5 season pretty much proves that and it will be interesting to see what the next stop in the former BYU stand out’s career is? One thing is for sure it’s easy to root for Ansah because he is a great talent and a class act.

The Jacksonville Jaguars went to the AFC Championship without Allen Robinson. That might cause the Jags to move on from the star wide receiver:

It wouldn’t be right to say Allen Robinson is expendable because he has been such a big time player such coming into the league back in 2014. However the Jacksonville Jaguars were very close to going to the Super Bowl without Robinson and that could cause the front office to move on without the former Penn State alum. The cost of franchise tagging Allen Robinson would be around $16 million dollars for 2018. That’s a very steep price considering Jacksonville only has $25 million in cap space at the moment. It just makes more sense for this team to use that money on several affordable players, rather than paying top dollar for one superstar who is coming off an injury. Here is a list of free agents that could be signed for $25 million dollars based off what they earned last year. Julius Peppers, Sammy Watkins, Taylor Gabriel, Davon House, Eric Decker, Malcolm Butler, Austin Seferian-Jenkins, and Jordan Matthews could all be signed for that amount if they got paid exactly what they did last season. When you put that in perspective the Jaguars would clearly be better going with a package deal of several free agents over just signing Allen Robinson. Ultimately that leads us to the question of where Robinson will wind up? Well if AR15 wants to be paid be there’s definitely a mega-contract waiting for him in San Francisco. The 49ers have almost $120 million dollars in cap space. Not only that, they didn’t have one receiver who went over the 1,000 yards receiving mark. Adding Robinson would be a great addition for Kyle Shanahan’s emerging team. If John Lynch can retain Jimmy Garoppolo and pair him up with Allen Robinson good things are destined to follow. Only time will well tell how this situation plays out but it feels like a new team will be in Robinson’s future.
