The Tampa Buccaneers had a very successful NFL Draft and that started with the selection of Vita Vea. Vea is a tremendous interior defensive lineman who has a motor that never shuts off. It’s rare that you see a 347 pound guy with that kind of athleticism and clearly that compelled the Buccaneers front office to take the former University of Washington star with the 12 overall pick. Tampa Bay really struggled on defense in 2017 but the addition of Vea instantly gives them a better defensive front. Don’t be surprised to see number 50 handling his business all season long and if anyone can handle the pressure of the NFL as a rookie it’s definitely Vita Vea. The Buccaneers second pick wasn’t too shabby either. General Manger Jason Licht selected USC alum Ronald Jones in the second round and that was significant because of the former Trojans’ past track record. Jones rushed for 1,550 yards and 19 touchdowns last season and he was one of the bright spots for Clay Helton’s offense. Dirk Koetter and Licht believed Jones skill set would mesh well with the other running backs on their roster. It’s very likely Jones will actually seize the lead back role because he is a tough runner. Whether it’s his patience behind his blocks or using his ultra quick reflexes to turn upfield for big gains Jones can simply get the job done. Both of these draft picks are going to uplift this team on each side of the ball and there’s no telling how much of an impact that’s going to end up having? We do know the Bucs did get it right with their top two selections and really that’s all you can ask for. At the end of the day that should result in a better record this year and you have to respect that this franchise is at least taking steps in the right direction.
