The Arizona Cardinals are going through a transition at the moment. Gone is offensive minded Head Coach Bruce Arians and former Carolina Panthers Defensive Coordinator Steve Wilks is taking over the reins in Arizona. With Wilks focus solely on getting stops and forcing turnovers much of those schemes and play calls are going to come down to whether or not Chandler Jones can do his job effectively? Jones led the entire National Football League last season with 17 sacks and that was 2.5 half more than Jacksonville’s Calais Campbell. Jones also led the NFL in tackles for loss too (28) and what that tells you is the Cardinals have a guy that consistently gets in the offensive backfield. Offensive lineman can’t block Jones because his bull rush is too strong and his hands are too quick. When you combine all of that with a good initial burst you have one of the most feared defensive ends in the league. Wilks understands this and he knows he has to get the most of out Jones to optimize his output. Therefore you can almost guarantee that Wilks will have some nice loops and twists to help put Jones in favorable circumstances. It will be exciting to see Arizona take a defensive approach to the game because they have so much talent on that side of the ball. With a mastermind like Steve Wilks orchestrating all of those big time players the Cardinals have shot to surprise some teams. In order to do so Jones needs to play with the same tenacity he did a year ago. There’s no room for error when it comes to Jones’ ability to stack up sacks. By keeping points off the board this franchise has a chance to keep themselves in the game and hopefully pull some wins out late in the fourth quarter. We don’t know if the offense is capable of that yet but we do know Jones and the defense are going to do their part.
