After starting the season with three straight losses it appears the Cincinnati Bengals are finally getting things back on track. The Bengals have won two consecutive games against the Browns and Bills which has put Marvin Lewis’ team in a position to turn things around. The most significant reason why Cincinnati has been able to win those game is because of their defense. The Bengals have the 2nd ranked defense in the league surrendering just 262 yards per game. Not only that but the secondary has been quite remarkable as well they are also ranked second in the league allowing just 159 yards per contest. With the NFL being a pass now league it’s vital that teams are able to shut down the aerial attack. Dre Kirkpatrick, Adam Jones, and the rest of the Bengals defensive backs have rose to the occasion all season long which has made this team competitive again. There’s still enough time for Cincinnati to get back to the postseason, they will just have to follow the formula they’ve used in their past two wins. Really that strategy breaks down into three different goals. First the Bengals have to stop opposing ball carriers to the best of their abilities. Next the defensive line has to do everything they can to put pressure on the other team’s quarterback. Finally the secondary has to do what they’ve done all year which is break up passing plays. The defense is the heart and soul of this team right now which is a good sign as the season progresses forward. Now it will be up to the offense to come alive and put some points on the board. The good news is A.J Green is really starting to get it going, so things collectively are starting to look better in Southern Ohio. If the Ravens and Steelers aren’t careful Cincinnati could definitely put some pressure on them in the hunt for the AFC North title.
