Tampa Bay would be smart to select Ed Oliver but they just took Vita Vea in last year’s draft. The Bucs also signed Deone Bucannon this off-season but Buccannon is way too undersized to anchor the middle linebacker position at only 216 pounds. That’s why Jason Licht and Bruce Arians should seriously consider taking LSU’s Devin White with the 5th overall pick.

White is the top linebacker available and he won the Dick Butkus award during his final season with the Tigers. There’s a few other things that jump out at you when you take a look at White’s profile. He’s recorded over 125 tackles in each of his last two campaigns and he ran a 4.42 40 yard dash at the NFL Combine. This is a player who’s excellent at making plays in the offensive backfield and his sack (8.5) and TFL (28.5) numbers have been really good during his career in Baton Rouge. Throw in the fact that White is also the ideal size for an NFL middle linebacker (240LBS) it would make sense if Tampa Bay went this route because White can be the backbone of a defense. With sideline to sideline speed and good instincts who wouldn’t want to add someone who can be an immediate impact player? However that doesn’t mean that White is a flawless prospect and very few guys coming out are. Each of these rookies will grow a lot three or four years from now and Devin White’s weakness is sometimes he likes to wrap up with his arms and then slam the ball carrier to the ground. It would be better if he arrived with some authority by using his shoulder pads to deliver a blow. White did have an impressive hit against Feleipe Franks in the Florida game but it has to be more consistent. The bottom line though is there’s too many positives to overlook and this addition could take the Buccaneers defense from a 27th ranking to 17th. Which would result in a drastic improvement on the field.
