When John Lynch took over as the General Manager of the San Francisco 49ers he put an emphasis on the defense. In fact Lynch has drafted three defensive players in the first round since taking over the reins in 2017. Eventually those selections began to improve this group and now this team is currently ranked first in the league with only 850 yards surrendered.
Fred Warner and Kwon Alexander are a big reason why and they do a great job of cleaning up everything in between the tackles. Which takes away those inside running lanes and both guys are also fast enough to help out near the sidelines. Because of those abilities Warner and Alexander have combined for 35 tackles and they’re the two leading tacklers on this roster. The other key component in all of this success is the 49ers pass rushers. DeForest Buckner, Arik Armstead, Nick Bosa, Dee Ford, Solomon Thomas, and Ronald Blair have all recorded at least one sack for San Francisco. So there’s just too many talented defensive linemen on this front to block and they pin their ears back on every single snap. All of this talent has made Robert Saleh’s job much easier and it’s also the main reason this franchise is still undefeated. We’ll see how long it lasts?
