When the San Francisco 49ers drafted Jalen Hurd in the third round they got an interesting prospect. Hurd was a running back at the University of Tennessee for three years before transferring to Baylor University and switching to the wide receiver position.
The move made sense for Hurd because he was almost too big to be a running back at 6’5” tall. However that height would give him a leg up as a pass catcher and that was on display in the 49ers’ 17-9 win over the Cowboys. Hurd caught one pass and then refused to be denied on the goal line which is something a former running back would take pride in. That play finished in the end zone for six points and Hurd also scored on a jump ball where he elevated above the defender for a touchdown. It’s only the preseason but you couldn’t have asked for a better night from a rookie who is trying to make a name for himself in this league. With all of the talent that Jalen Hurd possesses this might not be a fluke either. Size, speed, power and a knack for the game. These traits are what will make the 23 year old a success in this league. Kyle Shanahan finally has all of the tools to outgun his opponents this year and Hurd should be a significant piece of the puzzle along with George Kittle, Marquise Goodwin, and Deebo Samuel. Meaning the 49ers could be entering a golden era in 2019.
