Sean Payton and the New Orleans Saints are adamant that Taysom Hill is their next franchise quarterback. But their actions tell a different story. If Payton thought Hill was next in line when Drew Brees retired. Then the Saints wouldn’t have signed Jameis Winston. However we have to give Payton some credit. Because there’s a little bit of strategy in this smokescreen that he’s using.
Most importantly he’s building up Hill’s confidence just in case his role does end up expanding at some point. New Orleans also uses Hill as a role player in special packages designed to give this offense an extra wrinkle. So Payton’s words help ensure that Hill has some positive reinforcement heading into the season. Despite all of that there’s no denying Jameis Winston is the more talented player. And it’s a stretch to suggest Hill will ever surpass Winston in the NFL. At the end of the day Winston has an arm and Hill can just barely get by. Maybe Payton doesn’t see Winston as the long term answer. But if it comes down to Winston and Hill. Payton’s not a fool and we know which one will end up on the field. That guy was the NFL’s passing leader last year (Winston, 5,109 yards).
