Jaylon Smith was an absolute star at the collegiate level and now it appears Smith will get an opportunity to make his name as a pro. The Dallas Cowboys have announced Smith will be a starter at the middle linebacker position and if you’re a Cowboys fan you you have to be proud of the progress the former Notre Dame standout has made. After missing all 2016 with a knee injury (ACL and MCL tear), this is a huge step in Smith’s own personal development. The last thing any player wants to have happen is to miss their entire rookie season. That’s a lot of reps and development that Smith wasn’t able to work towards however we all knew Jaylon Smith was a spectacular player it was just about getting past his medical setbacks. With hard work and determination Smith was able to do so and that alone says so much about the young linebacker’s character. That whole season away would have cost a lot of players their career, not only did Smith have to rehab his body. He also had to stay disciplined mentally and focus on the bigger picture at hand. Anybody would have been depressed sitting out their first whole year but Jaylon Smith was optimistic that he could get back and now Sunday he gets to live out those dreams. The fans will judge Smith by how well he plays on the field but give this guy a ton of credit for the things he has done off the gridiron. This miracle recovery plays a huge factor in Smith’s overall story line now and imagine how great the next chapter can be if the 22 year old can put together a Pro Bowl caliber season? It just goes to show that anything is possible with perseverance and resiliency. Jaylon Smith has an unbelievable grit about him and that should serve him well as the anchor of the Dallas Cowboys defense.
