LeGarette Blount had a monster season last year as a member of the New England Patriots. First Blount led the league in rushing touchdowns with 18 and then he helped the Patriots win the Super Bowl in a come from behind victory over the Atlanta Falcons. You would have thought Blount was safe with that kind of year but Bill Belichick chose not to re-sign the veteran electing instead to sign free agents Rex Burkhead and Mike Gillislee. To make things even more interesting due to the timing of Blount being let go by New England he had very short time to sign with another team or the former Oregon ball carrier was going to be inactive for the majority of the season because of a weird league rule. Eventually Blount signed with Philadelphia and the rest is history but now the Eagles will face the Patriots in the Super Bowl on February 4th. Clearly things aren’t going too bad for LeGarrette Blount because he has a chance to claim his second consecutive Vince Lombardi Trophy. How huge would it be for the Eagles running back to have a big day against the team that ended up passing on him? Players don’t need any extra motivation to play in such a big contest but there’s no doubt Belichick’s decision to move on is fueling Blount’s motivation. Doug Pederson would be wise to get his power back a few more touches when the big day rolls around because when LeGarrette Blount gets going he can be a punishing downhill runner. There would be nothing sweeter for the Philadelphia Eagles than beating the Patriots with one of their own guys. Even though Jay Ajayi will get the most carries for Pederson’s offense, there’s still a great role for Blount and he has to make the most of his opportunities.
