One good story line from yesterday’s NFL preseason games was Marcus Mariota and how well he looked in the Titans 22-17 loss to the Patriots. To be honest Mariota hasn’t been very good the past two seasons but there were some promising takeaways from how he performed last night.
Mariota made some nice throws from the pocket against Bill Belichick’s defense and it’s exactly what we’ve been waiting to see from the former Heisman winner. The fans in Nashville don’t want to admit it but Mariota needs to improve drastically in order to keep his job. Seeing him play well against New England has to give Mike Vrabel hope for the future but it wasn’t against the best competition. Mariota will ultimately be judged by how he holds up against the starters during his fourth season. There’s zero margin for error and even if he plays well the team still could move on. Which means Marcus Mariota has to probably throw for 30 touchdowns to prove he’s even worthy of being paid the kind of money that starting quarterbacks get in this league. Maybe his 63 yards and 1 touchdown in minimal playing time is the start of eventually achieving the goal of 30 touchdowns. Because it’s all about progressing and taking the next step when you’re a 25 year old who’s still trying to make a name for himself in the NFL. Nothing counts yet because these are exhibition games but they’re still an opportunity to develop and improve from a playing standpoint. The results have been favorable for Mariota so far and now it’s about consistently performing at a high level moving forward.
