We have officially entered the window where free agents can discuss negotiations with prospective teams. Maybe the biggest surprise about that is the fact that the New Orleans Saints still haven’t reached a deal with Drew Brees. That opened the door for Minnesota to reach out to Brees’ agent and now it’s possible that the Vikings could lure the veteran quarterback away from the Big Easy. It almost feels like this was the Saints plan the whole time. They know Brees is aging and they might want to go with a younger option. Not only that but they’ll have a lot more cap space to work with if Brees isn’t on their roster. The reason New Orleans could have played it out this way is because now it doesn’t look like they were willing to part ways with the prolific passer the whole time. Which would have caused a backlash from Saints fans and might have meant negative consequences for the franchise. There’s still a chance New Orleans and Drew Brees could reach a deal but letting other teams speak to the 39 year old signal caller isn’t the smartest move. It’s a real possibility Brees could wind up somewhere else and then it’s going to be tough for New Orleans to make the playoffs. The Vikings on the other hand will be significantly upgraded from adding the 11x Pro Bowler. Brees is everything Mike Zimmer is looking for in a QB and it’s very possible the former Purdue alum could play for a couple of more seasons. Not only that but this acquisitions could help the Vikings get past the Eagles when the NFC Championship Game rolls around. Brees is just too tactical to be stopped and the Minnesota’s offense is loaded with playmakers. That’s a perfect match for both sides and this is definitely a situation to keep your eye on.
