This past off-season a lot of free agent safeties got disrespected. Eric Reid, Kenny Vaccaro, and Tre Boston all struggled to find work. Eventually Boston landed with Arizona and looking back at that acquisition the Cardinals have to be very happy with the outcome of things. Boston already has 3 interceptions and we’re not even officially at the halfway point of the season (there’s one more week). When you combine those numbers with the 5 interceptions Boston had last season in Los Angeles it’s becoming evident just how much a of premier player the former 4th round pick is. NFL executives might prefer a defensive lineman over a safety who lines up 9 yards off the ball but Boston always finds a way to make an impact. This is an instinctive ball hawk who can be so disruptive against the pass and imagine how much worse the Cardinals would be without Tre Boston? They already have a 1-6 record and look totally lost on the football field. Throughout all of the chaos the 26 year old (Boston) has been one of the few positives for this ball club. The bad news for the Cardinals is they only signed him to a one year contract. It would’ve been much wiser to lockup the emerging star to a two or three year deal for a cheaper salary. Boston has increased his value though and now Arizona will have to pay him even more to keep him around. Right now Boston’s deal is worth $1.5M so that next contract might be over $5M per year. Some safeties (Eric Berry, Reshad Jones, Lamarcus Joyner, and Harrison Smith) make over $10M annually. So based off that production Boston has earned the privilege of a much greater pay raise. Regardless if that deal materializes or not this guy is one of the most underrated players in all of football. He deserves so much more recognition and a lot more money.

Made the jump: Tre Boston has transformed from an overlooked free safety to one of the game’s best defenders.
