No full time starting quarterback had a better quarterback rating than Alex Smith did last season and that makes things complicated for Patrick Mahomes. Even though Smith was traded this off-season and Mahomes will assume the lead quarterback role that just means the second year gunslinger out of Texas Tech will have big shoes to fill. We all know Patrick Mahomes has a huge arm but he will have to be savvy in the technical side of things too if he wants to be able to sustain the type of success Smith had. That means the 22 year old will have to prepare like a veteran, understand what opposing defenses are trying to do to him, and lead like a much more experienced player. If Mahomes can excel in the intangibles that made Smith such a star this past year in Kansas City it will be a huge step in the right direction. Especially since we know that Mahomes does have a physical skill set that puts him at a notch above most young players entering the NFL. With most defenses around the league becoming tougher and better every passing year that causes a need for strong armed pocket passers. Mahomes fits that mold perfectly and this guy can flat out let it fly. Andy Reid wouldn’t have felt so secure letting Smith leave had he not had a bright up and coming talent to replace him. The idea is Mahomes can come in and help this team get over their playoff hump. All the Tyler Texas native (Mahomes) has to do is put points on the board. Alex Smith had a great regular season but he only put up 21 points in a loss to the Titans. The idea is Mahomes can take this scoring offense to a 30 or 40 points ball club when next season rolls around. One thing is for certain it will be a lot of fun to watch the new look Chiefs operate.
