The New England Patriots battled back to defeat the Detroit Lions 30-28 but there was a huge loss in that victory when Julian Edelman was carted off the field with a knee injury. It appears Edelman tore his ACL and if thatā€™s the case itā€™s very likely New England will lose their star wide receiver for the season. Edelman just signed a new $11 million dollar contract in June and was expected to be a big contributor to the Patriots offense. After going for 1,106 yards last season itā€™s clear New England is going to miss this guy and now Brandin Cooks, Rob Gronkowski and Chris Hogan are going to have to uplift their play to alleviate the loss of Eldeman. Tom Brady will have to be better as well and the situation is definitely what Bill Belichick wanted to avoid. The preseason is time where you want to get your starters in condition but you donā€™t want to leave those valuable players in too long because injuries can happen. New England had to find that out the hard way but at the end of the day this team still can be dominant this upcoming season. They are just too deep at all the playmaker positions (running back / wide receiver) and luckily so because any other year they might not be able to overcome the loss of such a key player. It will be interesting to see the adjustments the Patriots make schematically to fill the role Edelman leaves behind. The Patriots liked to use Julian Edelman on a number of bubble screens so either Cooks or Hogan will have to take those plays going forward. At the end of the day though any way you slice it Julian Edelman is going to missed and the Patriots have to find away to adjust and move on.
