Football is such a violent sport and careers can end in the blink of an eye. The position who has it the worst is running backs because they take so much punishment throughout the course of a season. That’s exactly why Melvin Gordon wants a new contract before stepping on the field in 2019.
While from a team standpoint it’s not a good sign with the new season approaching. You can’t really blame Gordon because he needs to protect himself financially. After scoring 28 touchdowns in four years now is the time for the 26 year old to cash in. And Just like Le’Veon Bell Gordon will probably sit out every game if he doesn’t get a new deal. So the Chargers hands are tied because Melvin Gordon is one of the key pieces of their nucleus that they can’t afford to lose. Tyrell Williams already signed with the Raiders and that hurt this team’s odds of making it to the Super Bowl. Trading Gordon would almost guarantee that Los Angeles won’t make it to the big game and it’s not a risk they can take with an aging Philip Rivers. It’s essentially now or never and it leads one to believe Gordon will be paid. Everything is going right at the moment and there’s still $10M in cap space available. Why jeopardize the future by letting go of the best running back on this roster?
