The Oakland Raiders decided to release Bruce Irvin yesterday and that was another surprising move by Jon Gruden. Irvin’s tackles were way down (6) but he did already have 3 sacks on the season. Oakland hasn’t had a lot of success defensively and Irvin was a guy who could at least give them a little bit of a pass rush. The move is just the latest departure for the silver and black and it comes in the wake of the Khalil Mack and Amari Cooper trades. We know this organization has three first round draft picks in 2019 and right now every indication suggest they’ll go with Nick Bosa. Bosa is probably the closest Oakland can get to drafting a J.J Watt type of player but there’s obviously some concerns about his health. You have to wonder if we should favor a guy who is still out there competing at a high level every Saturday oppose to someone sidelined with an injury? Not only that there’s the question of whether or not the offensive minded Gruden would prefer to have Justin Herbert? Herbert could replace Carr as the quarterback of the future but the truth is Bosa is the more talented player. You can’t pass on that especially with Mack leaving a huge hole on the defensive side of the ball. Then you have to wonder what Oakland will do with their other two 1st round selections? We know the 49ers had six sacks against Carr and that offensive line. So they’ll definitely need a guard or tackle to sure things up. Jonah Williams would make a lot of sense if he’s still available and if not David Edwards could be in play. After addressing those other weakness a receiver will be needed to replace Cooper. Ultimately that will come down to A.J Brown or N’Keal Harry. Brown was the top receiver on the board coming into the season but Harry is rising faster than any pass catcher out there. Truthfully this would be the ideal group of rookies to bring in to start a new era in Las Vegas. Obviously Nick Bosa is the headliner and he would be a step in the right direction.
