When you talk about players that are flying under the radar Ryan Kerrigan has to be near the top of the list. The Washington Redskins outside linebacker doesn’t get a ton of media attention and that could actually be hurting his reputation as a player. However there’s no denying the impact he makes on game day.
With 84.5 career sacks Kerrigan is quickly approaching Dexter Manley (91 sacks) for Washington’s team record. Obviously that’s a tremendous achievement because it means Kerrigan is the greatest pass rusher to ever put on a Redskins uniform. We saw how talented this guy was when he destroyed his opponents as a member of the Purdue Boilermakers. The way Kerrigan dominated in college it was clear that his level of play was a league above everybody else and that didn’t change when he was selected 16th overall in the 2011 NFL Draft. How many times have we seen Ryan Kerrigan fire off the left edge and strip-sack an opposing quarterback? That seems to be the staple of his game and those forced fumbles have helped tilt the odds in Washington’s favor. Has this team had a lot of success recently? Absolutely not but they would be atrocious without number 91 out there. The other thing about Kerrigan that must be highlighted is his non-stop motor. Conditioning is critical in football because you can burnout quickly with all of that equipment on. Kerrigan is still going full-throttle once the fourth quarter rolls around and you have to applaud his tenacity. People also don’t realize that Kerrigan has been more productive than Clay Matthews stats-wise. So it’s time we stop overlooking the low-key defender and give him the respect he deserves.
