There’s only been four games played so far but Shaquil Barrett has already racked up 9 sacks. It’s an incredible pace for a player who was undrafted back in 2014 when he was coming out of Colorado State. Tampa Bay took a chance on Barrett after he finished his first five years with the Denver Broncos.
Ultimately that turned into a brilliant move by Jason Licht and Bruce Arians. Barrett is a perfect fit for defensive coordinator Todd Bowles’ system and this is one of the reasons the Buccaneers are starting to turn things around. Ndamukong Suh and Vita Vea are dominating in the trenches and then Barrett is coming off the edge and cleaning everything up. Things are working so well that Barrett has a legitimate shot at breaking Michael Strahan’s single season sack record (22.5). There’s still 12 games left and Barrett will need to maintain his pace if he wants to get it done. So it’s going to take maximum effort if he wants to get to the magic number of 14 more sacks but we’re counting down from here. Who would’ve known this guy would become such a diamond in the rough for Tampa Bay but right now he’s playing better than anyone. Through the first quarter of the season Shaq Barrett has been the best pass rusher in football and it’s been amazing to watch.
