Bob Quinn hasn’t given Detroit Lions fans much to cheer about lately. Not only has the team struggled ever since Matt Patricia was hired. Quinn has also made some foolish decisions by trading away Golden Tate and Quandre Diggs. So the fact that the Lions are even entertaining the idea of moving on from Darius Slay is flat out disgraceful.
It’s easy to see that Slay has easily been Detroit’s best player. He’s got 3 Pro Bowl appearances and has been the one guy who’s been a cut above the rest. It’s more than just Slay’s play on the field too. Quinn needs to send a message to the locker room that if you perform well then you’ll be rewarded for your efforts. The New England Patriots method of nickel and diming players isn’t going to work in the Motor City. The Lions don’t have that kind of prestige and morale isn’t good enough to keep trading away their top guys. This is a crossroads moment for Patricia, Quinn, and this entire organization. If you don’t re-sign Slay then what player do you retain? Nobody on Detroit’s roster has earned a large payday and the full support of their front office more than Darius Slay has. Anything less than that would be a failure.
