The Houston Texans traded for David Johnson this off-season. And they’re hoping that Johnson can recapture the form he had earlier in his career. At one point the Arizona Cardinals thought that Johnson could be the second coming of Marshall Faulk. But injuries ended up derailing him. Houston is hoping a fresh start will reinvigorate Johnson and sometimes being in a new system can do that. He’ll play next to Deshaun Watson in Houston’s offense and there’s no doubt he’ll help out on swing passes out of the backfield. It’s going to be harder to blitz Watson because Johnson is so good at catching the ball. He’s almost better as a receiver than a running back. And he’s good for about 4 touchdown receptions a year. So that should add another wrinkle for this team. However the Texans also need Johnson to replace Carlos Hyde. Hyde rushed for over 1,000 yards this past season but he signed with the Seattle Seahawks in free agency. If Johnson wants to fill those shoes he needs to get his burst back. There were times when he looked a little sluggish last year. If the dual-threat tailback wants to solve those issues he needs to get in top shape. That’s when you’ll see Johnson be at his best and start to resemble the player who was dominant back in 2016.
