The Tampa Bay Buccaneers just landed Tom Brady. But they were trending in the right direction before they signed the greatest quarterback of all-time. In fact Chris Godwin and Shaquil Barrett were two of the biggest breakout players in 2019. Godwin is a sure handed receiver who does most of his damage in the slot. He’s so deceptive with his route running and those weaker nickelbacks struggle to keep up. Godwin was so good he ended up having a better season than Mike Evans did.
Will he be the number one receiver in this offense full-time? It’s hard to say but it was a convincing year and that definitely played a role in swaying Brady. The other guy we have to talk about is Barrett. After four mediocre seasons in Denver. Barrett joined Tampa Bay and flourished in Todd Bowles’ defense. 19.5 sacks later and Barrett is now one of the toughest edge defenders in the entire league. These two guys are crucial in how far this team will go next season. If they’re both in the zone and Tom Brady also lights it up. Then the Buccaneers will make the playoffs. Especially with the NFL expanding the postseason from 12 to 14 teams.
