Everyone is fascinated by Alex Smith. We all know his comeback was a miracle. But there were so many other hurdles in his life besides his injury. One of the biggest was the fact that Washington didn’t want Smith back. Smith told GQ Magazine that “They didn’t want me there, didn’t want me to be a part of it, didn’t want me on the team.” Stop and think of the optics of all of this. Washington publicly supported Smith because it would be well received by the masses. But behind the scenes they didn’t want anything to do with him. It was all an act and another layer of resistance that was piled onto Smith. For a guy that was already dealing with the loss of his normal life. And with a leg that would never be the same. Smith deserved more support from Washington. Yet Smith went about his business. Determined to push through all the pain and disappoint. And in the end he played a crucial role in getting Washington into the playoffs. The word legendary would be an understatement.
