Newly acquired Defensive Back Tyrann Mathieu is entering uncharted territory when it comes to his professional football career. After spending five seasons with the Arizona Cardinals Mathieu’s old team decided to part ways with him for salary cap reasons. Ultimately that led to the Texans signing Tyrann Mathieu to a one year $7M dollar contract and this was a good pick up for Houston. Mathieu is going to be plugged into this secondary and immediately create some plays on the backend. There’s no substitute for outstanding pass coverage and that’s exactly what the former LSU Tiger is known for. The 26 year old (Mathieu) has made a living by intercepting passes and clamp down on opposing receivers. It’s amazing how well this guy can break on a route and those instincts are what make him such an outstanding defender. To be honest Mathieu can do more than just cover people too. So many times on film he diagnosed the play and came up in run support fearlessly. It’s so rare to see a secondary player react like that because a lot of times they’re timid. The Honey Badger is cut from a different cloth though and that’s evident every time he steps on the football field. Houston had no problem spending $7M on a ball hawk because there’s so much upside to Mathieu. When you factor in that J.J Watt and Whitney Mercilus are both coming back from an injury this season plus Tyrann Mathieu will be added to the mix. It’s clear as day that the Texans are serious about reclaiming the AFC South and if they want to do so their defense has to rise up. DeShaun Watson is also returning to the line up on offense but if Watt, Mercilus, and Mathieu can force a bunch of turnovers that will so key for this team’s success moving forward.
